Sergio García discusses in Financecommunity the keys to generating value in private equity

Private equity is facing a more demanding environment, marked by more expensive financing, slower divestment processes and still-elevated valuations.

In an interview with Financecommunity, our founding partner Sergio García explained how this scenario is bringing the focus back to fundamentals and real company growth as the main source of value creation.

For García, the current context requires relying less on multiple expansion and leverage, and placing greater emphasis on operational improvement within companies. In this environment, Qualitas Funds maintains its longstanding commitment to the mid-market, a less competitive segment in which the firm identifies opportunities to generate value through growth, management professionalization and efficiency improvements.

This philosophy rests on three principles that have guided Qualitas Funds for more than two decades: diversification, discipline in entry pricing, and a reduced level of debt. This approach has also accompanied the firm’s international expansion and remains unchanged following its integration into Ridgepost, completed in 2025. Joining the global private markets platform has allowed the firm to gain scale and expand the solutions available to investors without altering Qualitas Funds’ investment focus.

In recent years, the firm has strengthened its offering with new strategies in direct co-investment, NAV financing and secondaries. In this last area, Qualitas Funds has launched its first secondaries fund, with a maximum size of €100 million, to capture opportunities arising from the slowdown in divestments and the market’s growing liquidity needs.

Technology is another pillar García addresses in the interview. Qualitas Funds has spent more than a decade developing artificial intelligence and data analysis tools through Qualitas Insight, its proprietary platform, which compiles information from 50,000 funds and 20,000 private equity transactions. For García, the ability to implement these technologies quickly will become increasingly decisive in capturing value, with mid-sized companies starting from an advantageous position thanks to their greater agility.

With more than €1.6 billion in assets under management, over 1,700 investors and the backing of Ridgepost, Qualitas Funds is entering a new phase while keeping intact the principles that have defined its strategy. Specialization in the mid-market, international diversification and alignment with investors will continue to be the firm’s pillars, with a focus on less competitive segments where opportunities to generate value throughout the cycle continue to exist.
